Jesus said, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' - Matthew 22:37-39 (NIV)
Jesus calls us all to love God, to love our neighbors, and to go and make disciples in our everyday lives - with our neighbors, co-workers, classmates, friends, and family. This involves showing concern and compassion to others using our own personal resources and time, especially with those who have yet to put their faith in Christ.
The following suggestions are a few ways you can get started. Be creative and follow God's lead.
What you can do to attack SPIRITUAL EMPTINESS?
- Get to know a neighbor or colleague at work, or someone at school. Begin to develop caring relationships with those around you.
- List and pray for 3 people who do not know the Lord Jesus in a personal way.
- Seek opportunities to share the Good News through your testimony.
- Invite and bring someone to a weekend church service. Easter and Christmas are a great time to bring unchurched friends.
- Believe that God could use you to host a new group! Begin praying for 3 or 4 people who do not have a relationship with Jesus. Invite them to a new small group that you would lead. This is a "church plant!”
What you can do to attack EGOCENTRIC LEADERSHIP?
- Pray for leaders in your community, workplace and school and seek to help them know Jesus and lead like He did.
- Help a young believer take their next steps with God in their spiritual journey. Have them read The Purpose Driven Life.
- Invite someone who knows Christ, but is not in a small group, to join your small group.
- Challenge someone in your small group to co-lead your existing group.
- Encourage everyone in your small group to pair up as spiritual partners to grow in God's five purposes for their lives.
What you can do to attack EXTREME POVERTY?
- Pray for people in your sphere of influence that are in financial need.
- Ask God to make you aware of people living in poverty around you. Commit some time, talent, and resources to assist those in need.
- Seek to help the poor in practical ways (like job searches, budget planning, or assisting in debt reduction).
- Find ways to help them develop new job skills through classes or training.
- Be willing to provide food for a homeless family.
What you can do to attack PANDEMIC DISEASE and care for the sick?
- Practice kindness to someone you know who is sick: take them a meal, drive them to the doctor, do errands or shopping for them, watch their children, send an encouraging note or call them.
- Pray with those you know who are physically suffering. Pray for healing, strength and comfort. Commit to pray for two weeks and show genuine concern by following up.
- Find out how you can visit the sick who are hospitalized.
- Visit a nursing home or elderly shut-ins and seek to care for the neglected and isolated.
- If you know someone or a family affected by HIV/AIDS, show God's love for them and offer to help provide care.
What you can do to attack CRIPPLING ILLITERACY and impact education?
- Look for someone younger than you who you could build a relationship with and become a mentor.
- Encourage someone around you who may be struggling because they lack further educational opportunities. Offer to tutor or support those who have not been able to finish high school or their G.E.D.
- Invite those who are learning English as adults to an English as a Second Language (ESL) class.
- Make a commitment to spend time with your kids and their friends.
